Samuel Adams delivered one of the most timeless truths about freedom ever written. In a letter to James Warren dated February 12, 1779, he wrote: “If Virtue & Knowledge are diffused among the People, they will never be enslaved. This will be their great Security.”
Samuel Adams wasn’t just offering noble sounding rhetoric. He lived them as one of the most relentless and effective revolutionaries of his era. A Harvard educated writer and organizer, he spent years rallying ordinary colonists through fiery pamphlets, petitions, and behind the scenes leadership. His efforts helped turn scattered grievances into a unified push for independence.
One of the most badass examples came on the night of April 18, 1775. British troops marched out of Boston with orders to arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Lexington. Thanks to Paul Revere and other riders who sounded the alarm, Adams and Hancock slipped away just in time. The next morning the first shots of the American Revolution rang out at Lexington and Concord. This was the famous “shot heard round the world.”
Adams understood that an educated, virtuous, and liberty loving people would never submit to tyranny. He spent his life helping spread those very qualities so the new nation could stand strong. That commitment helped turn a collection of colonies into a republic built to endure.
The quote still remains true today. An informed and principled citizenry really is the security for freedom.
