Shawana Denise Harris, a former California Department of Motor Vehicles employee, was sentenced to five years in federal prison for accepting bribes to fraudulently issue commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) to unqualified applicants. Between 2011 and 2017, she altered DMV database records to show that at least 185 applicants had passed written and driving tests when they had not, often receiving $1,500 per applicant for a total of approximately $277,500 in bribes.
Harris pleaded guilty in April 2022 to conspiracy to commit bribery, identity fraud, and unauthorized computer access, with sentencing occurring on November 3, 2022. The scheme involved trucking school owners and other co-conspirators who paid Harris to bypass safety requirements, putting public safety at risk by allowing unqualified drivers to operate heavy commercial trucks.
