Asbury Theological Seminary has been removed from the United Methodist Church’s list of approved ordination schools after remaining committed to the historic Christian teaching that marriage is between one man and one woman. According to seminary leaders, the decision was tied to Asbury’s refusal to align with the UMC’s newly revised position affirming same-sex marriage.
Asbury said it fully participated in the process and was honest about its doctrinal commitments, but would not compromise its biblical convictions in order to remain on the list. Seminary president David Watson made clear that while the school respects the UMC’s authority to make its decision, Asbury’s commitment to Scripture and the historic witness of the Christian faith has not changed.
For many believers, the move is another sign of the widening divide in Methodism and a reminder that faithfulness to biblical truth often comes at a cost. Even so, Asbury says its mission remains unchanged: to train men and women for ministry with fidelity to God’s Word, regardless of denominational pressure.
