59. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
Acts 7:59, KJV.
Stephen continues the history of the people of God.
Where Moses, at God's instruction, built the Ark of the Covenant, God's presence went with the Ark, right up to the time Solomon built the temple and placed the Ark behind the curtain.
Stephen reminds them that God had made all things, and a temple will not contain Him.
Stephen continues, explaining how the prophets were put to death, and they foretold the coming of Christ, and that these leaders murdered Christ on the cross.
When they heard this, they responded in rage, but Stephen, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up saying, "I see the heavens opened and Jesus is standing at the right hand of Almighty God."
And they screamed and covered their ears, and rushed at him.
Casting him out of the city, they stoned him. A young man named Saul watched over their belongings.
We are at today's verse.
Stephen asks God to forgive them, and falls asleep in peace.
Here are things we can learn:
God is bigger than a building or system.
Religion without Christ ends in destruction.
How the heart responds to the truth reveals the inner man.
Stephen was not alone when his time came; Christ was with him, and He will be with every believer when our time comes. Amen.
