THE HIJRA WAS NO DESPERATE FLIGHT: MUHAMMAD'S CALCULATED MOVE TO BUILD AN ARMY IN 622 C.E.
In 622 C.E., Muhammad executed a strategic migration from Mecca to Yathrib, later called Medina, after years of limited success through preaching alone.
He had already lost his key protectors and faced the fallout from his earlier public compromise with pagan goddesses. Rather than a panicked escape, the move followed secret negotiations that secured military commitments from divided local clans.
Representatives from Yathrib gave two pledges at al-Aqaba that went far beyond religious acceptance. They swore to obey Muhammad in war and peace, protect him as they would their own families, and fight under his direct command.
These oaths turned the migration into the foundation for an armed political order rather than a refuge for the persecuted.
Upon arrival he immediately paired Meccan emigrants (Muhajirun) with local supporters (Ansar) in a brotherhood system that broke old tribal bonds and centered loyalty on himself.
A mosque was constructed as the headquarters for both worship and military planning. Raids against Meccan caravans began within months, testing his new forces and generating resources while religious claims justified the violence.
Quran 2:216 declares that fighting has been enjoined upon believers even though it is hateful to them. The real meaning establishes combat as a religious obligation, not optional self-defense but a prescribed duty that reshaped the community around conquest and expansion. Later verses reinforced this shift.
Quran 9:29 commands fighting those who do not believe in Allah until they pay the jizyah (tribute tax) willingly while humbled. Without softening, this sets a permanent policy of subjugation for non-Muslims under the new order.
Biblical leadership stands in direct opposition. Jesus told His disciples that His kingdom is not of this world and refused to call down legions of angels or organize armed resistance.
He sent followers to preach repentance and the Gospel without secret war oaths, plunder economies, or political constitutions that subordinated outsiders by force.
Early Christians responded to persecution by continuing to proclaim truth rather than migrating to build militias and launch raids.
The Hijra marked the decisive pivot from failed accommodation in Mecca to enforced dominance through armed power. It set the enduring pattern of using religious authority to consolidate military control and expand influence.
The Islamic calendar itself begins with this event, celebrating the birth of a theocratic war camp rather than a purely spiritual message.
This calculated foundation continues to influence how Islamic movements interpret migration and power today. When groups treat relocation as the first step toward eventual control rather than genuine integration, they follow the same strategic logic established in 622 C.E.
The contrast with biblical faith remains clear: Jehovah builds His kingdom through the preached Word and voluntary repentance, not through secret military pledges and raids that turn prophets into warlords.
