Man Detained After Allegedly Damaging Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool During Cleanup Efforts
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man was taken into custody by U.S. Park Police after allegedly damaging the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool while maintenance crews were working to address an ongoing algae problem.
According to reports, National Park Service employees witnessed the man allegedly cut or remove a large section of the blue sealant lining the bottom of the pool. Workers who were clearing algae from the water reportedly observed the incident and documented it with photographs and video.
The reflecting pool has recently been the subject of public attention after a green algae bloom reappeared just days after the pool was refilled. The renewed algae growth sparked speculation online, with some claiming the issue may have been caused by deliberate sabotage. President Donald Trump publicly suggested vandals and political opponents may have intentionally interfered with the project.
However, authorities have not confirmed any connection between the algae bloom and criminal activity, and no official determination has been made regarding the cause of the discoloration.
In response to the algae problem, National Park Service crews have been using a combination of hydrogen peroxide treatments, vacuuming, skimming operations, and nanobubble ozone technology to restore the pool’s appearance and water quality.
The detained individual is accused of damaging the pool’s sealant while cleanup efforts were underway. Authorities have not yet released additional details about possible charges.
The investigation remains ongoing.
