“Our preaching is not the reason the Word works. The Word is the reason our preaching works.”
— H.B. Charles Jr.
These are sobering words for every preacher, teacher, and servant of God. We must never confuse the power of the message with the abilities of the messenger.
It is not our eloquence, our research, our emotional delivery, or our carefully crafted tones that give life to dead souls.
Men may admire presentation and still remain unchanged.
The flesh can stir emotions, but only the Spirit-breathed Word of God can awaken the heart, produce faith, convict of sin, heal, deliver, and save.
The power has always been in the Word.
What then must we do?
Prepare your vessel.
Live in holiness.
Walk in repentance.
Guard your private life before God.
A polluted vessel weakens the clarity of the message it carries.
Prepare your message.
Read deeply.
Meditate prayerfully.
Labour in the Scriptures.
Seek understanding.
Pray over the text until the truth first grips your own soul.
And then—preach the Word.
Not opinions.
Not trends.
Not entertainment.
Not motivational speeches disguised as sermons.
Preach the living Word of God and trust Him to do what no man can do. The Word will not return void. It still works effectually in those who believe.
“For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance…” — 1 Thessalonians 1:5
