#new Senate Majority Leader John Thune is being accused of lying for telling colleagues and the media that Republicans don't have 50 votes to advance the SAVE act
#DC
Sen. Mike Lee immediately pointed out that 50 senators voted in favor of voter ID and proof-of-citizenship for voter registration that were tied to amendment 5453 on the budget reconciliation bill during the first week of June.
Thune has repeatedly claimed that the votes “currently aren’t there” to bypass the filibuster and pass the bill - but apparently according to Sen. Lee and the voting records in the Senate - Thune is not being truthful.
Vice President JD Vance even saying that instead of just claiming the votes aren't there, force the vote and make Senators go on the record.
The legislation, which passed the House in February would:
Prohibit states from accepting a federal voter registration application without proof of U.S. citizenship.
Require voters to have a photo id at the polls for federal elections.
Direct states to remove non-citizens from voter rolls
Create an alternative process for applicants who don't have standard documents but can otherwise prove citizenship.
Thune saying,
“We’d have to have 50 [votes] to defeat every amendment. And that’s not where we are right now.”
But when he had the opportunity to change Senate rules, nuke the filibuster, overrule the parliamentarian and push the bill through with a simple majority - he has declined
Instead, Thune has prioritized other legislation.
Lee, the lead Senate sponsor of the SAVE America Act alongside Chip Roy, has accused Senate leadership (Thune) of either “either lying or not understanding the Senate rules.”
Lee says that Republicans should use every available tool to pass the SAVE Act.
Republicans are calling Thune a RINO and “Mitch McConnell 2.0,” accusing him of being part of the the same Swamp and McConnell and calling for his replacement.
Details
🔷️The amendment 5453 vote proved 50 senators will support the central requirements of the SAVE Act when forced to go on record.
🔷️President Trump has made the bill a top demand, at times saying he will not sign other legislation until strong election-integrity measures pass.
🔷️Over 84% of Americans support voter ID and citizenship verification including democrats.
🔷️Failure to pass the bill before the midterms will be blamed on Senate GOP leadership, not Democrats, and will fuel primary challenges against incumbents seen as part of the swamp.
