Here’s the full story:
On Mount Ebal, Professor Adam Zertal, of blessed memory, discovered an ancient structure that is believed to be Joshua’s Altar.
In the 1970s, the young archaeologist decided to explore the hills of Samaria with a group of volunteers.
One day they decided to climb Mount Ebal, above Shechem. Suddenly they came across a structure and could not understand what it was. The structure was roughly 3,300 years old. It was clearly not a residential building. Someone had built it for a specific purpose. There were large quantities of animal bones at the site. Then they found Egyptian jewelry from the time of the pharaohs. They also found scarabs and Egyptian seals. They set up a camp there in order to continue investigating the structure.
The rabbi of Shavei Shomron became interested and met with Zertal. He went to his bookshelf and took out a Mishnah that included a drawing of what an ancient altar looked like. He asked Zertal whether what they had found looked like that. Zertal answered yes. Exactly like that. The rabbi then said, “You have found Joshua’s Altar.”
It turned out that the animal bones were from animals that are permitted for sacrifice according to Jewish law. Not donkeys or pigs, but sheep, goats, and cattle. The findings closely matched what one would expect at a sacrificial site.
And the Egyptian jewelry? Who built this altar? According to Zertal’s interpretation, the Children of Israel, after crossing the Jordan, ascended Mount Ebal and built this altar in preparation for the ceremony of blessing and curse, exactly as described in the Torah.
Carbon-14 testing and many additional findings led Zertal to conclude that this was the Altar of Joshua.
