Little-known Revolutionary fact: The settlers of the original 13 colonies were among the most literate and well-read people of their time. They owed this to their Puritan heritage, which stressed that one should be able to read and comprehend the Bible for himself. Consequently, the King James Bible was the most imported book from England, followed by Commentaries on the Laws of England by William Blackstone.
The Bible reminded them that they were created by God with certain unalienable rights, and the law book revealed to them the way in which the monarch in England was systematically stripping them of those rights. This was the seed that would eventually grow into the Tree of Liberty.
