This is a legitimate historical photograph of the Harris family living in a cave home in the Arkansas Ozark Mountains during the Great Depression. It is believed it was in the Boston mountains.
Not AI. Not a movie set. Real people, real hardship.
The photo is widely identified as being from 1937, after the family reportedly lost their farm and made shelter inside a dry Ozark cave. That cave is said to be on private land today, so it isn’t a public attraction or roadside stop.
Look close: the stone fireplace, quilts, shelves, firewood, beds, children, and a baby sleeping nearby.
Poor? Yes.
Defeated? No.
The Harris family’s cave home is a reminder of what survival looked like before comfort became normal.
Could your family have made it through one Ozark winter like this?
