3. Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with you.
John 21:3.
Chapter 21, with 25 verses, the author uses to close out his Gospel and bring spiritual insight.
Jesus has been raised from death and is preparing to return to His Father.
The disciples do not know what to do, so they return to their trade of fishing.
They fish all night and catch nothing. Jesus appears on the shore, asking if they caught anything; they answer, "No."
Jesus tells them to cast the net on the right side of the boat, and the net is filled with 153 fish.
The lesson: we are not productive without Jesus, but obeying His word brings blessings.
The verses reveal a real boat, a real distance from shore (300 feet), a real count of 153 fish caught, and an unbroken net.
When reading the Bible, we need to believe everything written is from God with a purpose to bring us closer to Almighty God.
Peter denied Jesus three times; here Jesus asks Peter three times, "Do you love Me?"
Jesus is healing Peter, letting him affirm his love three times. Afterward, Jesus tells Peter how he will die in the future, no longer denying Christ, but glorifying God in his death for Jesus.
In closing, the author John says, "I am an eyewitness to these events, and others can tell of the reliability and truthfulness of my testimony."
John, in a poetic way, says, "What you have read is only a small sample of the greatness of Christ."
The Gospel is selective in revealing what Christ did, not because He did little, but because He did so much.
Christ has done for us what nobody else could. Amen.
