Lukashenko is often dismissed as a clownish strongman, but that image hides a far more complex reality.
He is a brutal dictator with blood on his hands, yet also a calculating evil man who has outplayed both Russia and the West for decades.
Lukashenko’s regime has crushed dissent, tortured opponents, and dismantled every democratic institution in Belarus. His brutality is the foundation of his rule.
But what many underestimate is his ability to present himself as a simple provincial figure who stumbled into power. That persona is a mask. Behind it is a dictator who has repeatedly manipulated global powers to secure his own survival.
For years, he has played Moscow and Western capitals. When he needed money, he courted both. When he needed protection, he embraced Russia. When he needed legitimacy, he pretended to open dialogue with the opposition. Each move bought him time. Even now, after becoming deeply dependent on the Kremlin, he still finds ways to signal to Western actors that he is not fully lost to Moscow.
This duality is what makes him so dangerous. He is ruthless enough to crush his own people and smart enough to disguise some of his intentions. He knows how to appear dumb when it benefits him and how to appear loyal when it keeps him alive. Lukashenko relies on fear and manipulation. That combination has kept him in power far longer than anyone predicted
