36. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled,John 19:37. The author concludes his eyewitness account of Jesus's crucifixion and burial. After being placed on the cross, the soldiers divide Jesus's clothes, but they gamble among the four as to who should receive the coat. Jesus's mother and a few others are with Him at His death. Jesus was crucified between two criminals. After Jesus released His Spirit, the soldiers came to break His legs, but Jesus had already passed. So one soldier pierced His side with a spear. We come to today's verse. Jesus was numbered with transgressors, not a bone of Him shall be broken, they shall look on Him whom they have pierced. They parted my raiment among them. The author has included this, that you might no longer doubt, but believe that God the Son came in the form of a man and gave His life to cover with His blood all the sins of those who believe and obey Him. Believers took Jesus's body and placed it in a tomb carved out of rock, and placed a huge stone in front, along with guards. But this could not stop Jesus from rising from death. His resurrection is proof that Jesus had in fact defeated Satan, the sins of the world, and death. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
