22. Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.John 19:22. John 19; is the author's eyewitness account of the crucifixion of Jesus. Today we will go through verses 1-22. Pilate finds no fault in Jesus. He has Jesus beaten violently; a crown of thorns is placed on His head, and a purple robe. Thinking this will satisfy the mob, but it does not. Pilate says, "Behold the man! I find no fault in Him." The crowd shouts, "He claimed to be God's Son." Pilate is now more afraid than before, sensing something supernatural about Jesus, but his fear does not bring courage. Pilate asked Jesus where He was from. Jesus remains silent. Pilate has already ignored the truth before him. Now the Judge of all the earth is sentenced to death, and He carries the cross, a picture of Jesus carrying our sins. And the custom of Rome was to place the charge of the condemned above their head on the cross. Pilate wrote, in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, "JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS." So all the world could see. The religious leaders protesting said, "Write not, 'King of the Jews,' but that He said, 'He was the King.'" This is their open rejection of Jesus, the Son of God, saying, "We have no King but Caesar." We come to today's verse: Pilate refuses to comply, saying, "What I have written will not be altered." Roman law forbade the sentence to be changed once pronounced. Jesus was sentenced to death for being the King of Glory, sinless, innocent, the Son of the Living God, sacrificed for the sins of the world. Amen.
