Rest in peace, Joe Arpaio!
Clarence Joseph Arpaio, 94, passed away peacefully last night, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Arpaio was born in Barron, Mississippi in 1931, the son of a local potato farmer. He served as a special forces munitions expert in Korea and led 14,000 troops into battle in Vietnam as a Marine Captain.
When he returned home, he began a long career in law enforcement that included several "vacations" for "unnecessary" rough treatment of prisoners. It was that reputation that landed him the job as Maricopa County, Arizona's longest-sitting elected sheriff.
Throughout his career, Sheriff Arpaio made neglect and discomfort standard for inmates, with conditions so harsh that there were dozens of fatalities.
Sheriff Joe took comfort in the fact that they were all self-inflicted. Never once did his treatment actually cause the death of an inmate.
Thank you, Sheriff Joe, for a lifetime of service! You will surely get what's coming to you in the next life.
