No one believed he would survive. With injuries like his, the chances of living are almost nonexistent... But he endured.
Vladyslav Zhaivoronok, a fighter of the Azov Regiment, went through the hell of war, captivity, and unimaginable pain, yet never allowed the enemy to break him.
On the night of May 15–16, he suffered severe injuries. Despite his critical condition, Vladyslav remained in contact until the very last moment and managed to pass vital information to his command. What followed is a story that is difficult to believe even today.
His condition was so grave that the medics had almost lost hope. His pulse was barely detectable, and they were preparing to place him among the dead. But an anesthesiologist named Nina refused to let that happen. Beside her was a psychologist, Nastya, who immediately began searching for blood donors. Nearly unconscious, Vladyslav was asked about his blood type and Rh factor—and somehow, he was able to answer.
Several of his brothers-in-arms immediately volunteered to donate blood. Everything was done under conditions far removed from proper medicine: blood was mixed in a simple jar and transfused using a syringe. And it saved his life.
The operation was performed under constant shelling, surrounded by dust, debris, and complete unsanitary conditions. The damaged bone in his leg was amputated with an old rusty metal saw, and his wounds were stitched with ordinary fishing line. Yet even under such inhuman circumstances, the surgeons of Azovstal accomplished the impossible. Their work was a true act of heroism.
A few hours after the surgery, Vladyslav and other wounded soldiers were taken to Novoazovsk and later to Donetsk. There, he spent several months in captivity.
Doctors in occupied Donetsk did not believe he would survive. After Vladyslav regained consciousness, he received almost no medical care. Antibiotics were administered only several days later, dressings were changed infrequently, and his body temperature remained critically high. It seemed his body could not possibly endure.
But a miracle happened. Despite hunger, pain, infections, and the complete lack of proper treatment, his wounds began to heal. Even his damaged eye was saved, although it received very little medical attention.
In addition to physical suffering, the prisoners endured daily torture and relentless psychological pressure. They were told that Ukraine had forgotten them, that the war was lost, and that there was no hope. But Vladyslav refused to surrender. He endured.
On June 29, 2022, he was released during a prisoner exchange.
After treatment and rehabilitation, Vladyslav returned to life and today participates in campaigns supporting Ukrainian prisoners of war. He continues the fight—through different means, but with the same unbreakable faith.
“You must fight for your country at any cost,” says Vladyslav.
His story is not only about war. It is a story about the strength of the human spirit, about those who, even on the brink of death, do not lose their dignity, faith, or love for Ukraine. As long as people like him exist, our country cannot be defeated. Their courage will forever remind us of the immense price paid for freedom.
A deep bow of respect to you, Vladyslav. 🇺🇦
