There was a time in Appalachia when faith wasn't something reserved for Sunday morning—it was woven into everyday life.
The same hands that held a Bible also worked the fields, mended fences, cared for livestock, and provided for family. The same people who gathered around these church doors shared meals together, helped neighbors in times of need, and carried one another through life's hardships.
After services, many mountain churches hosted what was known as a "dinner on the grounds." Long tables would be filled with fried chicken, biscuits, garden vegetables, cakes, pies, and enough food to feed everyone who came. It wasn't just a meal—it was fellowship, community, and a reminder that nobody stood alone.
