A startup in Sweden came up with a surprisingly clever way to fight litter—by training wild crows. In 2022, Corvid Cleaning introduced a vending-machine-style prototype that rewards crows with food when they drop cigarette butts into the machine. The pilot was presented near Stockholm during Science Week as a creative way to reduce litter and cut street-cleaning costs. Since cigarette butts are one of the most common items tossed on sidewalks, the idea quickly grabbed attention. Smart birds—and a very smart cleanup plan.
