35. Jesus wept.
John 11:35.
Mary has joined her sister Martha.
Jesus sees her and the people weeping, and asks, "Where have you buried Lazarus?"
They say, "Come and see."
Today's verse, the shortest verse in the Bible: Jesus wept.
In these verses from 32-45, you see grief, love, and the power of God revealed.
Jesus weeping is real. He is God, but is compassionate and feels our sorrows and joys with us.
Jesus stands in front of the tomb.
How many have found their end here because sin entered the world? The tomb where hope, dreams, and plans end.
Jesus says, "Take away the stone."
Martha says, "Lord, it is too late. Our brother has been there four days, and the body will smell."
Jesus says, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"
Jesus, thanking Almighty God who always hears Him, says, "Lazarus, come forth!"
Jesus commanded life where there was only death.
Lazarus comes forth wrapped in burial clothes.
Jesus says, "Loose him, and let him go."
Such a beautiful end to a sad story.
You who believe with all your heart will, in fact, experience exactly what Lazarus experienced, with one glorious exception: because of Jesus's sacrifice, you will never ever die, be in pain, get sick, or be sad again.
All praise and glory and honor to King Jesus, the Son of the Living God, and our eternal Savior. Amen.
