The Chandelier Tree is a 276-foot-tall coast redwood tree in California with a 6-foot-wide hole cut through its base to allow cars to drive through. It is located in Drive-Thru Tree Park, along US Route 101 near Leggett. The tree is estimated to be over 1,500 years old and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area.
The hole in the tree was cut in 1930 by Charlie Newton, a local lumberjack and entrepreneur. Newton was inspired by the Tunnel Log, a similar redwood tree with a hole through it that was located in nearby Klamath. He hoped that the Chandelier Tree would attract tourists to the area and help to boost the local economy.
The Chandelier Tree has been featured in numerous films and television shows, including The Simpsons and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. It is also a popular destination for weddings and other special events.
In addition to the Chandelier Tree, Drive-Thru Tree Park also features a number of other attractions, including a gift shop, a picnic area, and a hiking trail. The park is open year-round, from 8:00 AM to dusk. Admission is $10 for cars, $5 for motorcycles, and $3 for pedestrians.
