42. Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me."John 8:42 John 8:28-42: Jesus speaks of His total dependence on Almighty God the Father. Jesus testified, "I always do the things that please the Father; He has not left Me alone, for the Father is with Me." Now some hearing Him believed Him and put their trust in Him. Jesus speaks to the believers, "If you stick with what I teach and live by it, all will see that you are truly My followers. And you shall know the truth, and it shall make you free." The unbelievers say, "We are from Abraham and have never been slaves," although they historically have been slaves to Egypt, Babylon, and Rome. They are blind to being slaves to sin. Jesus responds, "Whoever commits sin is a slave to sin; sin is not the government's fault, it's in the heart of each individual." Finally, Jesus reveals the truth of the matter: "If you really loved God, you would love Jesus, because Jesus was sent from God to save mankind." Those who trust Jesus as their Savior believe He died in their place and paid all punishment for all sins committed, and because of Jesus, they have received a pardon and now have access to heaven and eternal life.
