For two decades, a simple $6 knob that can be 3D printed in about an hour has been grounding Black Hawk helicopters roughly four times per month.Instead of selling the part or the intellectual property rights so the military can fix it themselves, the contractor forces the government to replace the entire expensive system every single time — at a cost of $40,000 per incident to taxpayers. This isn’t a procurement problem. It’s a deliberate shakedown. This is exactly why “Right to Repair” legislation needs to be included in this year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).Our military should not be held hostage by contractors over basic parts.
