🇨🇦 On this day in 2006, Captain Nichola Goddard was killed in Afghanistan, becoming the first female Canadian combat soldier to die on the front lines.Captain Goddard was only 26 years old when she lost her life on May 17, 2006, during a battle in the Panjwaye District of Kandahar Province. She was serving as an artillery officer with the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, and was attached to Canadian frontline forces as a forward observation officer. Her role was dangerous and demanding. She helped direct artillery support and coordinate fire while serving close to combat operations, a responsibility that required calm judgment under extreme pressure.During the battle, her Light Armoured Vehicle was struck by rocket-propelled grenades, and she was killed while carrying out her duties.Captain Goddard’s death marked a painful and historic moment for Canada. She was the first Canadian woman killed in action since the Second World War and became a lasting symbol of courage, service, and sacrifice. She was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for her leadership and dedication. Her legacy also lives on through the Captain Nichola Goddard School in Calgary, scholarships created in her name, Goddard Lake in Saskatchewan, a Highway of Heroes bridge in Ontario, and the Canadian Coast Guard vessel CCGS Captain Goddard M.S.M.Twenty years later, Canada remembers not only her historic place in military history, but the person behind the uniform: a daughter, a leader, a soldier, and a Canadian who gave everything in service to her country. ❤️🇨🇦💬 Why do you think it is important to keep sharing the stories of Canadian soldiers like Captain Nichola Goddard?
