Just last week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) treated America to the dazzling economic insight that "you can't earn a billion dollars." This week she has graduated to advanced demographics, and the results are, predictably, even worse.Speaking Friday at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics during a chat with former Obama strategist David Axelrod, the congresswoman pivoted from billionaires to Tennessee redistricting, where she informed the audience that Republicans are coming for Black America. Here is the actual quote, courtesy of AOC herself:"When you are seeing states like Tennessee want to wipe out every Black representative on the map in these states, we have an obligation as Americans to stand with Black Americans and communities whose representation is being disenfranchised."Stirring stuff. The only tiny, minor, almost negligible problem is that Tennessee does not currently have a single Black member of the U.S. House. The seat she is hyperventilating about, Tennessee's 9th in Memphis, is held by Rep. Steve Cohen, a 76-year-old white Democrat who has cruised to reelection in that majority-Black district since 2007.The Republican most likely to win the redrawn 9th is Charlotte Bergmann, a Black woman from Memphis who has been quietly running against Cohen for years and is on the 2026 GOP primary ballot. So let us recap.AOC's "obligation to stand with Black Americans" amounts to defending an elderly white incumbent against a Black female challenger, because the wrong letter follows Bergmann's name. The map she calls racist could finally accomplish what the old gerrymandered lines never managed, sending an actual Black representative from Memphis to Washington. The grievance has nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with the letter D.This is exactly the kind of identity-by-party math the Founders never built into the Constitution. Federalist No. 57 reminded us that the electors of federal representatives are "the great body of the people," not racial categories sorted on a precinct map by an army of Beltway consultants. Representation, in the original design, was a choice made by voters, not a quota assigned by AOC.In one week she has told Americans they cannot earn a billion dollars and that a Black Republican woman does not count as Black representation. At this rate, by next Friday she will be explaining that water is dry.Source: X
