Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a smart woman. She graduated from Boston University with a degree in economics, she earned a seat in Congress, and she has built one of the largest political followings in the country. Whatever else you want to say about her, the woman is no dummy.Which is exactly why her latest history lesson is so insulting.Here is the quote: "The American revolution was against the billionaires of their time, and we are declaring independence from such an extreme marriage of wealth and power in the state!"So the American Revolution, in AOC's telling, was a class war against the rich.Except every American who paid attention in fifth grade knows this is not even close to true. The American Revolution was led by some of the wealthiest men in the colonies. John Hancock was a merchant prince. Charles Carroll of Carrollton was the richest signer of the Declaration. Robert Morris bankrolled the war. Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Benjamin Franklin all sat near the top of colonial society.And then there is George Washington. After he married the wealthy widow Martha Dandridge Custis in 1759, he gained control of roughly 17,500 acres of land, instantly making the couple one of the wealthiest in the colonies. By marriage, the Father of Our Country became, by some accounts, the richest of them all.The Revolution was not a fight against rich men. It was a fight led by rich men against a tyrannical king who taxed them without representation and trampled their God given rights.AOC knows this. She has to know this. Which leaves only one conclusion. She is counting on her audience to not know it. She is counting on poorly educated voters to buy her BS.That is not history.
