And anyone who pointed out what was actually happening was dismissed as a partisan crank looking for a culture-war fight. Today’s report from the Justice Department’s Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias settles the argument forever. Seventeen federal agencies contributed to it. More than 300 pages of exhibits and 1,100 footnotes back it up. It is, in the words of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, a “consistent and systematic pattern of discrimination against Christians” carried out by the United States government against its own citizens. And it should end the political career of every official who participated in it. Read what the Biden Department of Justice actually did, in its own documented record: * The Biden DOJ aggressively opposed concerned parents through the Garland Memo and used its enforcement authority against parents who defended their children’s safety at local school board meetings. * The Biden DOJ went to work to mandate the adoption of gender ideology throughout the federal government far beyond the Supreme Court’s ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County. It treated requests for religious exemptions as harmful conduct to be regulated. It pushed its incorrect Bostock interpretation in amicus briefs even after federal courts repeatedly rejected it. * The Biden DOJ advised the White House and senior leadership that federal employees’ religious objections to the COVID vaccines were “insincere” or “not religious.” * The Civil Rights Division sidelined Christians in favor of preferred constituencies. That is not a partisan characterization. That is the United States Department of Justice describing the conduct of its own former leadership. Read it again and let it land. The report goes further, and this is where the bombshell becomes a bunker buster. The FBI investigated, monitored, tracked, and scrutinized traditional Catholics who had committed no crime. The Biden DOJ aggressively prosecuted nonviolent, praying pro-life demonstrators under the FACE Act while moving slowly on violent attacks against pregnancy resource centers. HHS and DOJ withdrew a notice of violation against a hospital that, according to the report, coerced a Christian nurse into participating in an abortion against her religious objections. Christian schools and ministries were given a coercive choice: abandon biblical teaching on sex and marriage, or lose access to federal nutrition programs that feed hungry children. As a senior fellow at the Family Research Council who has studied religious liberty for decades, I am telling you with the full weight of that record: what the Biden administration did to American Christians is the most systematic federal targeting of a religious population in modern American history. It is worse than we feared. It is worse than we warned. And it was carried out by lawyers who took an oath to the Constitution. Now the Trump Department of Justice is undoing it, point by point: ✓ The Trump DOJ is protecting parental rights by rescinding the Garland Memo and taking legal actions to protect students, including a lawsuit to stop the Loudoun County school district from unlawfully forcing gender ideology on students who hold sincere religious beliefs about marriage and human sexuality. ✓ The Trump DOJ has returned the department to law and order by rescinding the Biden Bostock policies. As a result, all people of faith may once again freely exercise their faith. ✓ The Trump DOJ is protecting religious liberty in the federal workplace by issuing an Office of Legal Counsel opinion affirming religious liberty protections for federal employees, including accommodation requests. ✓ The Trump DOJ is ending the weaponization of the FACE Act by protecting houses of worship. The Civil Rights Division has filed statements of interest supporting faith communities in RLUIPA cases across the country. That is the policy reversal. Now we need the accountability. The men and women who signed the Garland Memo are still working in law and politics. The DOJ lawyers who told the White House that a Christian’s religious objection was “insincere” are still licensed to practice. The senior officials who looked at a praying grandmother outside a clinic and decided she belonged in federal prison are still drawing salaries somewhere. They have not been investigated. They have not been disbarred. They have not been called before Congress to explain themselves under oath. Most of them have not even been asked a hard question by a reporter. That ends now, or it never ends. If the United States Department of Justice has formally documented that its own prior leadership engaged in systematic religious discrimination, then Congress has a duty to subpoena those officials. State bar associations have a duty to open ethics inquiries. The voters of this country have a duty to remember every name attached to this report the next time any of these people seek public office, a federal judgeship, a board seat, or a cable news contract.
