1. And he looked up, and saw rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.
Luke 21:1.
This is a reminder of how Jesus sees our giving.
Jesus sees the gift; He notices how much, but He is far more interested in the faith of giving and the motive of the heart.
We are not told the rich men's names, nor that of the widow.
Jesus notices the noise made since most of the coins were made of brass, and the attention given when a large amount was cast into the chest.
The people took notice of the noise too.
The widow, invisible to the congregation, cast in two small coins, all she had. The value at the time of each coin was 1% of a day's wages.
Now the widow held nothing back but gave everything she had.
And Jesus takes notice, telling the disciples that she gave more than all the rich men put together.
The widow gave everything, showing trust in God's ability to provide.
The rich men were not making any kind of sacrifice; they put in what they would not miss, but enough to make some noise.
Whatever we return to God—time, money, attention—are we sincere, or are we just making noise? Amen.

We were told the receptacle had a metal funnel attached in which the coins were deposited. The more and larger the coins, the louder the noise as they fell down into the receptacle.
