38. For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.Luke 20:38. Jesus is confronted by the Sadducees, who do not believe in the resurrection or eternal life. They bring up a law in Deuteronomy 25:5-6, where if a man died without having children, his brother would marry the widow to preserve the family's heritage. This is the law of the kinsman redeemer. The Sadducees make up a story of seven brothers who obey the law, but each dies before bearing offspring. Finally, the woman dies, and they ask Jesus which brother is the wife's husband. Jesus tells them they do not understand the scriptures, for all who are God's die here but are then raised to eternal life, and no one in heaven is married; your focus will be on God. Christ came as a man and performed the act of kinsman redeemer, bringing us back to our inheritance of being the children of God, which sin removed from us. God is the God of the living. When He told Moses, "I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob," their bodies died on Earth, but God is still their God. We are alive in Christ. Amen.
