Oh good, Hakeem Jeffries is here to teach us about civility. What a treat.
Less than 48 hours after a gunman opened fire at a Secret Service checkpoint outside the White House Correspondents' Dinner, trying to reach a ballroom that contained the President and First Lady of the United States, the House Minority Leader logged onto X to deliver his sermon on tone. Here is exactly what he wrote:
"America will not be lectured about civility by far right extremists in Congress. Particularly those who provide aid and comfort to hundreds of violent rioters who brutally beat police officers on January 6. There will be ample time to vigorously debate the issues of the day. Now is a time to unify."
Now is the time to unify, he says. Right after calling half of Congress "far right extremists." Right after smearing GOP lawmakers as people who give "aid and comfort" to violent rioters. Right after weeks of his own party comparing duly elected officials to Nazis, fascists, and existential threats to democracy. But sure, Hakeem, we're all ears about civility.
Here's the part Jeffries hopes you forgot. Just days before the shooting, this same man told the country his strategy against Republicans was "maximum warfare, everywhere, all the time." Days. Not years. Not in some forgotten 2017 floor speech. Days.
He also said nothing, not one syllable, about Jimmy Kimmel going on national television 48 hours before the attack and joking that the First Lady had "the glow of an expectant widow."
Apparently the rules of civility apply to everyone except the people writing them.
