The "Ladder of Light" is a moving memorial in Naperville, Illinois, designed by artist Paul Kuhn to honor fallen firefighters. It uses two high-output Elation Proteus Maximus™ LED profile luminaires to project beams of light, creating the illusion of a ladder stretching into the sky. Located at Firemen’s Memorial Park, it commemorates firefighters who died in the line of duty.
Key details of the installation include:
Symbolism: The "ladder" represents firefighters running toward danger to save others.
Technology: The Proteus Maximus fixtures provide 50,000 lumens and use framing shutters to shape the beams into a rectangular, ladder-like appearance.
Commemoration: The memorial honors Lt. George Winckler (1991), and Lt. Richard Rechenmacher, Engineer Jerry Herring, and Firefighter Bernard Petrowski, who were killed in a 1970 engine collision.
Installation: The project, which involved Twelve Limbs Art Studio, was unveiled on the 50th anniversary of the 1970 tragedy.
