A father who threw his daughter into an icy ocean... to save her life...October 1917. The Atlantic is raging in a storm.
On board a passenger ship bound for New York, — 28-year-old Italian carpenter Antonio Russo and his five-year-old daughter Maria.
Antonio's wife died in childbirth. America was their last hope for the future.
At 2 am a huge wave hit the ship.
Water poured into the lower compartments of the third class. The ship tilted sharply. Panic, screams, crush on the stairs. Antonio grabbed his daughter and rushed forward, holding her above the water.
But the crowd was too dense, and time — was running out.
He realized: they won’t get to the boats.
In the chaos, Antonio reached the broken porthole.
A child could barely get into it.
Behind it — black, icy Atlantic.
The searchlights of lifeboats were already flashing in the distance.
Maria cried, called her mother, clung to her father.
He looked at her one last time...
and he pushed his daughter out the window. Maria flew into the ocean screaming.
Antonio shouted after her, blocking the roar of the storm:
«Swim, Maria! Swim to the light! The ships are close! Swim!»
Seven minutes later the ship sank.
Antonio Russo died along with 117 third class passengers.
His body was never found.
Maria was pulled out of the water after 45 minutes — alive, but in severe hypothermia.
A five-year-old girl was left an orphan in a foreign country without knowing a word of English.
For 25 long years she believed that her father had abandoned her. That he threw her into the ocean because he no longer needed her.
Only at the age of 30 did she find out the truth: her father deliberately sacrificed himself so that she would have a chance.
Maria Russo lived a long life — until she was 92 years old (died in 2004).
She had four children, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren...
There are only 31 descendants who were born just because one person made an impossible choice that night.
At age 83, she told her story in an interview:
«I thought my father was killing me...I didn’t understand that he was saving me.
For many years I thought that he was leaving me.
The truth is that he threw me into life».
Every birthday she heard his voice:
«Swim to the light».
«I have been sailing to this world for 78 years.
I hope he's proud of me».
Her last words about her father were simple:
«Thank you, Dad.
Thank you for giving me life.
I love you».
