China’s Latest Virus Threat: Seafood Bug Jumps to Humans, Risks Blindness.
A virus once limited to shrimp and fish has now infected people in China, triggering a nasty eye condition that inflames the eye and spikes pressure inside it, potentially leading to permanent vision loss.
The culprit is Covert Mortality Nodavirus, or CMNV, detailed in a recent Nature Microbiology study. Researchers found it in eye tissue from 70 patients with persistent ocular hypertension viral anterior uveitis, known as POH-VAU. Most cases tied directly to handling raw seafood without protection or eating it uncooked. No evidence yet of easy person-to-person spread.
No specific cure exists. Doctors manage symptoms with anti-inflammatory drugs and pressure-lowering treatments; some severe cases need surgery. The good news: simple heat cooking kills the virus.
Cases remain limited for now, mostly linked to raw marine products in high-aquaculture areas. But after past outbreaks started in China and spread globally, caution makes sense. Skip the raw sushi and oysters, wear gloves when prepping seafood, and cook it thoroughly. Common sense beats waiting for the next surprise.

Good thing I do not eat shrimp. Fish is frozen. So anything in it should die.
