16. And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?Luke 13:17. Jesus, teaching in the synagogue on the Sabbath day, sees this woman, disabled for 18 years, and He calls to her, and says to her, laying His hand on her, "Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity." The ruler of the synagogue is upset that Jesus healed on the Sabbath day. Jesus calls him a hypocrite, for the rulers take their livestock out to water, and the priests kindle a fire for the daily sacrifice, which their traditions forbid. Jesus points out that their taking care of their livestock is work, and this woman has been afflicted for 18 years. Compassion and mercy take priority over rule-keeping; a human is more important than livestock. The lesson: God values every person. The Sabbath exists to serve humanity, not to restrict God's work or kindness. Do not let rigid human traditions block love and justice. Jesus proves every day is a good day to do good. Amen.
