42. But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Luke 10:42.
Jesus entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha invited Jesus to come into her house.
This is the sister of Lazarus and Mary.
Mary sits at Jesus's feet and hears His words.
Martha, overcome with the preparation of the meal, complains to Jesus that Mary has left her to do all the work, asking Jesus to tell Mary to help.
We come to today's verse, where Jesus says, Mary has chosen the better part.
The lesson: spiritual nourishment is a lasting blessing from Jesus; the temporary task will get done.
Martha is a picture of someone active, distracted by duties, busy with worldly concerns.
Mary is a picture of attentive, focused devotion, sitting at Jesus's feet, listening to Jesus's words, having an eternal blessing.
Putting Jesus first will always be rewarded.
There is plenty of time to do our chores. Jesus will come one day; will you be praising Him first, or doing busy work?
No one who put Jesus first was ever sorry for it. Amen.
