Israel did not camp randomly in the wilderness. The tabernacle stood at the center, surrounded first by the Levites, and then by the twelve tribes arranged on four sides. God quite literally placed Himself in the midst of His people. “The LORD dwells in the midst of Israel.” (Num. 2; 5:3)
