U.S. District Judge James Boasberg has quashed grand jury subpoenas issued by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office in an investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
The probe focused on alleged cost overruns exceeding $700 million in renovations to the Fed’s headquarters, totaling around $2.5 billion, and potential false statements by Powell in congressional testimony.
Pirro stated the decision is “wrong and without legal authority,” granting Powell “immunity” from scrutiny.
In his ruling, Judge Boasberg criticized the investigation as politically motivated, aimed at pressuring the Fed over interest rate policies.
This has raised concerns about the central bank’s independence amid bipartisan backlash.
