Chuck Schumer accused President Trump of encouraging political violence after a series of Truth Social posts in which he accused six Democratic lawmakers of “seditious behavior, punishable by DEATH,” and reshared a post calling for their execution: “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD!!”In response, Schumer said, "I've never seen a president who has gone this low. I've never seen a president or heard of a president who has done more to encourage political violence.”He revealed that he had taken steps to ensure the safety of the lawmakers Trump targeted, “I have asked the Capitol Police to give special protection and keep an eye on Slotkin and Kelly as well because you gotta worry after the president says these things.”Schumer added, "We are very concerned. The trouble is the president not only seems not concerned about it, but almost delighting in this kind of dangerous political rhetoric. And it's despicable.”The controversy stemmed after six Democratic lawmakers, many of them military or intelligence veterans, released a video urging active-duty service members to refuse "illegal orders". The video, organized by Senator Elissa Slotkin and featuring lawmakers like Senator Mark Kelly and Representative Chris Deluzio, warned that threats to the Constitution are “not just coming from abroad, but from right here at home.”
