Remembering 1LT Oliver Coleman Jr
Key West, Florida | MACV Advisory Team 90 | KIA November 1, 1969 | Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam
He came from the sunlit streets of Key West, Florida — a world away from the jungles of Tay Ninh where his story would end. Oliver Coleman Jr had enlisted through the U.S. Army Reserve, trading the calm of coastal life for the chaos of a faraway war. As a First Lieutenant and Training Officer with MACV Advisory Team 90, he worked shoulder-to-shoulder with South Vietnamese forces, guiding and advising under fire — part diplomat, part soldier, all American.
On November 1, 1969, while serving his country in South Vietnam, 1LT Coleman’s mission ended in tragedy. His aircraft went down during hostile action over Tay Ninh Province, claiming his life just six months into his tour. He was 26 years old.
From Key West to Vietnam, his path was one of courage and conviction. The quiet leadership of officers like Oliver Coleman Jr helped shape the men they trained — and their sacrifice ripples forward in every generation that wears the uniform.
