The Arbeit macht frei gate of the Auschwitz I camp. The inscription over the gate of the Auschwitz I camp was a cynical promise and a lie given to all the prisoners who entered the camp. It became one of the most recognizable visual icons of Auschwitz.

While the Germans confiscated most possessions that belonged to all groups of prisoners of the camp, during the extermination of Jews, plunder became part of the deceitful strategy. Most Jews deported to Auschwitz were promised resettlement and were given instructions to pack the most important items with them - to continue their lives.
