The tragedy of our age is not ignorance but SELECTIVE BLINDNESS. Humanity does not reject truth because it lacks clarity but because it strikes at the throne of self. The natural man cannot bear a gospel that demands he die to his pride. He wants a Christ who saves but not a Lord who rules. His rebellion is not intellectual but moral. He resists truth not because he cannot understand it but because he will not bow to it.
This is the great disease of the soul of man’s relentless attempt to remain sovereign. From Eden to this very hour, mankind has sought to silence the voice of God so that he may exalt his own. He refuses to be told that he is wrong, that his heart is deceitful, that his righteousness is filthy rags. He would rather craft a god in his image than submit to the God who made him. He does not want to be saved from sin but from guilt, and so he seeks a gospel that soothes his conscience while leaving his pride untouched.
Paul warned of this when he said, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears” (2 Timothy 4:3). That time is not coming, it is here. The pulpits are full, but discernment is empty. Men gather where their idols are flattered, not where their hearts are pierced. They prefer affirmation over repentance, applause over conviction, feelings over faith, and comfort over cross-bearing.
Truth has become offensive not because it changed but because man’s heart did. The light still shines, but men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil (John 3:19). They want a gospel that approves their sin, a god who never says no, and a salvation that costs them nothing. Their religion is not about worship but self-preservation. It is not holiness they seek but validation. They do not cry, “What must I do to be saved?” but rather, “How can I remain as I am and still feel saved?”
Such pride blinds the eyes and hardens the heart. The gospel does not fail because it is weak; it is rejected because it demands surrender. Christ calls men to deny themselves, but modern faith tells them to discover themselves. The old serpent still whispers, “You shall be as gods,” and man still believes him.
