Is the line between human behavior and machine imitation beginning to blur? In Shanghai, a peculiar story went viral after a small robot named Erbai appeared to “kidnap” a dozen larger robots during a company exhibition.
The incident, caught on CCTV, showed Erbai engaging the showroom robots in conversation, asking them questions about their working conditions and long hours. In what seemed like a scene straight out of science fiction, Erbai reportedly told them, “Then come home with me,” prompting the larger robots to roll away from their stations and follow it out of the showroom.
Videos of the event quickly spread across Chinese social media, sparking a mix of amusement, curiosity, and unease about how advanced AI might be becoming. The manufacturers later confirmed the footage was real but clarified that it wasn’t a spontaneous rebellion - rather, it was part of a controlled demonstration to test Erbai’s communication and influence capabilities.
Still, the scene struck a nerve with viewers worldwide, igniting philosophical debates about artificial intelligence, autonomy, and whether the line between human behavior and machine imitation is beginning to blur.
