In one of the boldest art heists in decades, thieves stormed the Louvre in broad daylight on Sunday morning, slipping away with priceless crown jewels in less than four minutes.
The robbery took place around 9:30 a.m. local time, just after the museum opened. The suspects parked a mechanical lift along the Seine to reach a balcony, forced open a window with an angle grinder, and entered the Apollo Gallery, home to France’s historic crown jewel collection. Once inside, they smashed two high-security display cases and grabbed eight priceless royal artifacts before fleeing on two motorcycles.
French authorities believe the thieves were working for a criminal organization and warn the jewels could soon be dismantled and sold. The Louvre remains closed as investigators comb through CCTV footage and search for the four suspects, per BBC.
