They knew they wouldn’t survive. They went anyway.October 3, 1993 — Mogadishu, Somalia. A U.S. Black Hawk helicopter, call sign Super Six Four, was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and spiraled into the city below. The crew was alive — trapped — and hundreds of armed militia were closing in.Circling overhead were two Delta Force snipers, Master Sgt. Gary Gordon and Sgt. 1st Class Randy Shughart. They saw what was happening from above — the smoke, the wreckage, the mob. They radioed for permission to insert and defend the crash site.Command denied them. It was suicide.They asked again. And again. Finally, permission came through.The two men fast-roped into the wreckage zone armed only with their rifles and sidearms. There would be no reinforcements. No way out.They moved through the debris, pulling the wounded pilot Chief Warrant Officer Mike Durant from the cockpit, setting up a small perimeter, and opening fire. The odds were impossible — some reports say 200 to 300 attackers. Yet Gordon and Shughart held their ground, firing methodically, covering each other until the last magazines ran dry.When the smoke cleared, both were gone — killed in action. Durant was alive, captured but spared — because of them.Their stand delayed the enemy, gave rescuers precious time, and became a legend inside the ranks of every American special operations unit that followed.For their actions, Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor — the first since Vietnam.Durant later said, “Their courage is beyond comprehension.
