Before battles, Long Otter painted the back of his head red, his face yellow, and his body blue to attract the strongest challengers in war. His stunning leather shirt had intricate bead work and numerous danglers. Such finery would have been worn only for special occasions.
The photo was featured on the cover of βCrow Indian Photographer: The Work of Richard Throssel.β Throssel was adopted into the Crow Nation in 1906 and lived on the reservation for some years.
