🎖 Medal of Honor 🎖
TSgt. John A. Chapman 🇺🇸
Afghanistan
March 4, 2002
Springfield, Massachusetts
High on the snowy peak of Takur Ghar, Afghanistan, Technical Sergeant John A. Chapman and his SEAL team reinserted into enemy territory to save a fallen teammate. Charging uphill through thigh-deep snow and heavy fire, Chapman stormed an enemy bunker and cleared it, killing all inside.
Wounded by enemy fire but refusing to stop, he left cover again—attacking a second machine gun position only meters away. Despite being mortally wounded, Chapman fought on, holding off enemy fighters and giving his teammates the chance to survive.
His last moments were spent in the fight, sacrificing his life so others could live. For his courage and selfless devotion, John A. Chapman was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor—the first Airman to receive it since Vietnam.
