Legendary TV series “The Andy Griffith Show” turned 65 years old this week. The fictional Appalachian town depicted in the show is one of the most recognizable of any in television history, along with the catchy intro song that people have been whistling for decades.
Before streaming it was the only show that would be playing somewhere in the world every hour of the day, and over the years it became a pop culture phenomenon.
The show began on October of 1960, where the world was introduced to “The Andy Griffith Show”, starring Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, Ron Howard, and Francis Bavier.
The first show to air was on October 3rd, named “The New Housekeeper”, where Aunt Bee made her entrance into the lives of Andy, Barney, and Opey. It was the most popular show of its era, quite possibly of all time, going for eight seasons, 249 episodes, winning multiple Emmys, and other awards.
“Mayberry”, the fictional town depicted on the show, is actually Mount Airy, NC which is where Andy Griffith was born and raised. To this day the town still has a yearly “Mayberry Days” week long festival where they have music, food, special guests, vendors, and more.
