Smith B&S Flyer
The concept was produced by A.O. Smith Corporation in 1916, but sold to Briggs & Stratton (B&S) in 1919 and later sold to the Automotive Electric Service Corporation in 1924 and renamed the Red Bug.
In 1910 Arthur Wall in the UK developed a direct drive wheel (Wall Autowheel) to power a bicycle and the technology was license to Smith Corporation in the USA in 1914.
The flyer design took the form of a 4-wheel wooden frame board with seating for two persons, powered by 5th ‘1-2hp engine in wheel’ drive. Some where fitted with two powered wheels.
The Wall engine started as a single cylinder 90cc two-stroke and developed into a 118cc four stroke and was produced by the International Auto-Wheel Company / BSA in the UK and licensed to companies in France, Belgium, Holland and the USA.
B&S would develop the engine design and adapt and it for use in powering small equipment and lawn mowers.
