THE ‘DOPPELL MOTORROLLER‘: GERMANY. 1953
The NSU Lambretta was a motor scooter built in Germany by ‘NSU Motorenwerke AG’ under license from the original Italian manufacturer Lambretti.
NSU built 125cc and 150cc versions from the early 1950s, both of which gained popularity in post-war Germany. The Lambretta boasted a fuel consumption of just 2 litres per 100 kms which saw 1100 units sold in the month of August 1951 alone.
But in 1953, NSU did something unique by developing this DOUBLE SCOOTER.
◾️The ’Double-Lambretta‘ was just that. It consisted of two Lambretta scooters joined side-by-side, intended for family transportation.
This effectively transformed the bikes into a small open car that could carry two adults and two children, achieving speeds of up to 78 km/h and a fuel efficiency of 3.4 litres per 100 km.
The innovative design however did not translate into a great sales success. While the unit had fans, particularly in Germany, it didn't achieve widespread popularity.
