Berlin Gold Hat
German/Swiss
Late Bronze Age
c.3,000-2,800ybp
.The Berlin Gold Hat, a Late Bronze Age conical headdress of thin gold leaf, is now displayed in Berlin's Neues Museum. It is the best-preserved of four similar finds from Europe, likely used by priests or deities in a sun cult. Acquired in 1996 without provenance, it dates to around 3000-2800ybp. The hat may have had astronomical or calendrical functions, and its craftsmanship reflects widespread sun-worship in Central Europe. Made from an alloy of gold, silver, copper, and tin, the hat is 745mm tall and crafted from a single piece of gold. Its bands feature buckle, circle, and crescent motifs, with a star at the tip. Similar patterns are found on the foot and brim of the hat.
